  • Welcome to Attendance Counts, a national initiative to address school absenteeism as early as possible. Our hope is that every school in every state begins to track, report and act on chronic absence. Attendance Counts grew out of an applied research project funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Casey continues to fund the initiative but other foundations concerned with early education, children's health and related issues have joined the effort. The least surprising finding of that work is that children in the early grades perform worse academically when they miss a month or more of school over the year. Chronic absence in kindergarten is associated with worse 1st grade academic achievement for all children and lower fifth grade performance among poor children. What is amazing is the discovery that chronic absence can affect such large numbers of young children nationwide and as many as 1 out of 4 K-3rd graders in some school districts. In addition, other researchers have found that poor attendance among middle and high school students is highly correlated to dropping out and a major problem in many communities. This site offers a space to learn, share and discuss ideas about monitoring, understanding and addressing chronic absence, starting in kindergarten or even earlier. I welcome your feedback on the ideas shared as well as how to make this site as useful as possible!
